What Is CGPA In Andhra University?

CGPA means Cumulative Grade Point Average. Simple words, it is the average of all your grade points, from all semesters, put together. One single number. That number tells how you performed overall in your degree.

Andhra University follows CBCS system. CBCS means Choice Based Credit System. This came into effect from 2015 batch onwards, and updated many times since. Under this system, every subject gets some credit points. And every grade you score in that subject also has a grade point value.

Your CGPA is basically the weighted average of all this.

Andhra University Grading System – The Full Table

This is the official grading pattern used at AU. Memorise this table, it will help a lot.

Marks RangeLetter GradeGrade Points
75% and aboveO (Outstanding)10
65% – 74%A9
60% – 64%B8
55% – 59%C7
50% – 54%D6
40% – 49%E5
Below 40%F (Fail)0

Simple na. Above 75 marks means you get O grade, 10 points. Below 40 means fail, straight zero.

There is also W grade. This comes when you fail due to shortage of attendance. And I grade, means incomplete, this changes into proper grade later.

How SGPA Is Calculated

Before CGPA, you must understand SGPA first. SGPA is Semester Grade Point Average. It is only for one semester. Not the whole course.

Formula is this:

SGPA = (Sum of Credit × Grade Point for each subject) ÷ (Total Credits of that semester)

Let's take small example. Say you have 3 subjects in a semester.

SubjectCreditsGradeGrade PointCredit × Grade Point
Subject 14A936
Subject 23B824
Subject 33O1030

Total credits = 4+3+3 = 10 Total credit points = 36+24+30 = 90

SGPA = 90 ÷ 10 = 9.0

See, not that hard. Just multiply and divide.

How CGPA Is Calculated

Now for CGPA, you do the same thing, but across all semesters, not just one.

CGPA = (Sum of Credit × Grade Point across all semesters) ÷ (Total Credits across all semesters)

Important point here. As per Andhra University rules, CGPA gets calculated from 2nd semester onwards. First semester alone won't show CGPA, only SGPA. From semester 2, CGPA starts appearing, and keeps updating till your final semester.

So by the time you finish your degree, your final CGPA is basically your whole academic performance, rolled into one number.

Andhra University CGPA To Percentage – The Formula

This is the most searched question. Everybody wants to know their percentage, because most job forms and higher study applications ask for percentage, not CGPA.

As per Andhra University's own official circular, the formula is straightforward:

Percentage = CGPA × 10

That's it. No complicated maths.

For example:

  • CGPA 8.0 → Percentage = 80%
  • CGPA 7.5 → Percentage = 75%
  • CGPA 6.2 → Percentage = 62%

Small note here — you may see some online calculators using CGPA × 9.5 formula. That formula is used by other universities like Delhi University pattern, not Andhra University. For AU specifically, official rule is multiply by 10. Please always confirm with your college examination branch also, formulas do get revised sometimes.

Minimum CGPA Required To Pass

Different courses have slightly different minimum requirement:

  • B.Tech / B.Arch / B.Pharm / 5 Year Integrated Courses: Minimum SGPA 5.0 per semester
  • PG in Arts & Commerce: Minimum SGPA 5.0
  • PG in Engineering, Science, Pharmacy: Minimum SGPA 5.0 to 5.5 (depends on batch year regulation)
  • Overall pass requirement: CGPA 5.0 minimum, in most courses

If you score below this, you may have to reappear for improvement paper.

CGPA Classification – Distinction, First Class, Etc.

Once you complete your course, your final CGPA decides your class of degree.

ClassificationCGPA Range
Distinction7.0 and above
First Class6.0 to below 7.0
Second Class / Pass5.0 to below 6.0

This range is roughly same for most UG and PG programs at AU, though small variations exist between streams like Arts/Commerce and Engineering/Pharmacy. Always cross-check with your specific department notification.

Why Andhra University Doesn't Have Official Online Calculator

Many students ask this. Why AU doesn't provide a direct online tool where you enter marks and get CGPA instantly?

Honest answer — as of now, Andhra University has not launched an official CGPA calculator website. Students rely on manual formula, or third-party tools available online. Those third-party tools are helpful for quick estimate, but for official purpose, your marks memo and consolidated grade sheet issued by university is the only valid document.

So use online calculators for personal reference only. For anything official — admission, job, scholarship — always submit your actual AU issued grade card.

Common Mistakes Students Make

  • Confusing SGPA with CGPA — SGPA is per semester, CGPA is overall.
  • Using wrong multiplier (9.5 instead of 10) while converting to percentage.
  • Forgetting that CGPA starts from semester 2, not semester 1.
  • Not accounting for credit weightage — a 2 credit subject and 4 credit subject don't carry equal weight in the formula.

Avoid these, and your calculation will always be correct.
